“What’s this?” Porter called from his basement bedroom.

“Keep looking,” I hollered from the kitchen. “You’ve got to find those instructions if the Science Fair board is due tomorrow.” How could I forget? Science Fair due the day after Thanksgiving break was our punishment for a long weekend of gratuitous eating. Attitude adjustment; be thankful we had the long weekend to wrap up Science Fair loose ends.

More than a few loose ends to wrap up here. Was this little slip in scheduling Porter’s fault, or mine? I probably should have kept better track of due dates, because it was Sunday (the day before deadline) and Porter didn’t even have a hypothesis. A little voice in my head told me the with-it parents had likely pulled together an award-winning board weeks ago. I took a sip of wine and continued chopping carrots, ignoring the voice.

“It’s an old newspaper article,” Porter continued, undaunted. I heard him wander up the stairs, his feet shuffling as he read. “It’s about Lainey, that woman whose photos you found in the ice-cream churn. The one whose daughter called.”

“Really?” I said, reaching out my hand, recalling the photos were wrapped in a piece of newsprint. “Where did you find it?”

“On my dresser under a bunch of stuff.”

I’d probably left it down there when I was reading about the Greek myths. Oh, Lord, had his room not been cleaned since that day? He handed me the paper, which was a listing of what appeared to be current events. Or current events in 1973. One was circled in red ink, reading:
